ULI Philadelphia, whose mission is to shape the future of the built environment for transformative impact in communities, had its Awards for Excellence program on June 15th at the National Museum of American Jewish History in Philadelphia, PA

The Urban Land Institute (ULI) is a non-profit organization committed to promoting responsible land use and sustainable community development which includes a global network of professionals and experts in real estate, land use, and urban planning.

One of ULI's key initiatives is its Awards program, which recognizes and celebrates outstanding projects that exemplify the highest standards of design, innovation, and sustainability. The ULI Excellence Awards provide a platform for acknowledging remarkable achievements in the fields of architecture, engineering, and construction, while showcasing projects that enhance the quality of life, improve community engagement, and create positive social impact.

We want to make special mention of two projects in particular that were recognized.  One being the Ralph J. Roberts, Boys & Girls Club of Germantown, Philadelphia, which took home a win for the small-scale category.  The team was led by Heckendorn Shiles Architects and included Wick Fisher White (MEP Engineers), O'Donnell & Naccarato (Structural Engineers), and Daniel J. Keating Company (Construction).  The project consisted of transforming an existing three-story, 27,300-sf historic building into a revitalized space for the youth in the community.

Our team contributed expertise in mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems design, ensuring the club's functionality and sustainability. Specific design upgrades included new HVAC equipment and systems, a new Building Automation System for control of all HVAC equipment, new plumbing fixtures, and a new automatic sprinkler system.

The second project, Ewell Plaza, a newly transformed park, in Lancaster, PA was a finalist in the open space category.  The City of Lancaster underwent a project to redevelop the park named after its Olympic champion Barney Ewell.  This project was led by Mahan Rykiel Associates, Inc.  Wick Fisher White designed the lighting and seasonal power and designed a new cistern to collect rainwater and reuse it for irrigation.

All in all, it was a great night celebrating many of the region’s transformative projects.  It was a privilege to work on the design and construction teams that helped bring these two projects to life.

 Congratulations to all!
