As the first phase of Mayor Cherelle Parker’s Riverview Wellness Village initiative, the renovation of the Riverview Fernwood Cottage represents a significant step in transforming how the City of Philadelphia supports its most vulnerable residents. Previously a low-income senior living facility, the 40,000 SF building was renovated into a short-term living center designed to offer essential services such as counseling, substance abuse treatment, and job training opportunities.
Wick Fisher White supported the City of Philadelphia by providing MEP engineering services tailored to meet both the project’s tight timeline and long-term operational needs. Our team strategically selected HVAC, plumbing, and lighting systems that had short equipment lead times and minimal maintenance requirements. This approach helped accelerate the construction schedule and reduce future upkeep costs key goals for the City’s Department of Public Property.
The design-build delivery method allowed for close collaboration between stakeholders, streamlining coordination and allowing the team to quickly respond to evolving project needs. A clear understanding of the client’s vision was crucial, and our proactive communication helped ensure that the building’s new infrastructure aligned with the intended programming and use.
The renovation introduced all-new mechanical systems, including HVAC and plumbing upgrades, as well as new energy-efficient lighting. These improvements modernized the facility, enhanced occupant comfort, and made the space more suitable for its new role as a transitional resource for residents in need.
This project underscores the importance of clear goal-setting and teamwork in meeting aggressive timelines, especially in renovations of this scale. While the project was not designed in Revit and is not pursuing LEED certification, it serves as a strong example of how thoughtful MEP engineering can support social impact initiatives through practical, cost-effective solutions.
