Wick Fisher White provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection (MEP/FP) engineering for the interior renovation of approximately 21,000 usable square feet on Level 7 at 400 Connell Drive in Berkeley Heights, New Jersey. The project transformed existing commercial office space into a modern, flexible workplace to support the relocation of Kennedys Law. This office reflects the firm’s move of its New Jersey operations from Basking Ridge to Berkeley Heights and represents an important step in its continued growth.
Mechanical
The design focused on adapting existing building systems to fit the new space plan (restrooms were not included in the renovation). Two existing custom air handling units, each located in separate mechanical rooms on the seventh floor, were retained and integrated into the new layout to provide primary air distribution. New fan-powered boxes with electric reheat were installed for perimeter zones to maintain occupant comfort, while shut-off VAV boxes with electric reheat served interior zones. A supplemental split system was also designed to condition the IDF room, ensuring reliable cooling for critical IT equipment.
Electrical
Electrical work included modifications to the existing normal power branch circuit system to serve new lighting, furniture power, general-purpose receptacles, and equipment connections. New lighting controls were added to support energy efficiency and flexible operation. Emergency egress lighting—along with associated power and controls—was installed to enhance life safety. Emergency fixtures were fed from generator-backed emergency power panels provided by the building. The fire alarm system was also updated to align with the renovation and maintain occupant safety.
Plumbing
Plumbing scope included modifications to the domestic cold water distribution system to support new fixtures in the HUB area, Wellness space, and Hospitality Bar. Two dedicated electric water heaters were provided: one for the Hospitality Bar and another for the HUB and Wellness areas, allowing those spaces to receive domestic hot water independently from the building’s central systems.
Fire Protection
Fire protection services involved modifying the existing wet sprinkler system to suit architectural changes and maintain code compliance throughout the renovated areas.
From design through construction administration, Wick Fisher White delivered coordinated engineering solutions aligned with the new space plan, resulting in a comfortable, functional, and code-compliant environment tailored to Kennedys Law’s operational needs.
